Student Project - 2015

Pen on paper.

16" x 20"

As an artist used to creating photorealistic portraits with pencil, I decided to switch it up with my medium and explore just the simple pen on paper. I was inspired by the look and classic feel of intaglio printing, and the most famous example of currency printing. I used one pen and contour lines and stippling to get the "shading" effect with a variation in the spacing and length of lines.

This piece was integral in finding a style that I enjoyed creating. The satisfaction and ease of repetitive linework gives me the opportunity to be fully absorbed in these types of work. It has been my therapy and my way of honoring the subject in a detailed yet basic way of making art.
